I'm not surprised by the level of surprise...

I'm not surprised, but I thoroughly can not understand the amount of people who are genuinely surprised by the weather. I mean seriously folks, we live in VERMONT in case you forgot. If this is your first year in Vermont I grant you some leniency in the fact you don't know the weather patterns here yet. Just wait five minutes or drive 10 miles and it's like a whole new world of weather. Everyone else... well, there's just no excuse for your level of surprise and the look of complete shock on your face.

The calendar says that Spring begun on March 20th, as any Vermont should well know THAT DOES NOT APPLY HERE! Let me just briefly outline what the seasons for a full calendar year IN VERMONT are ACTUALLY like....

January - Snow, but not enough to justify the below freezing temperatures and maximum of 8 hours daylight. Snow tires required.

February - Big dump of snow in the beginning. By the last week temperatures alternating between -5 to +45, no snow in valleys, first mud season. Snow tires required.

March - Let's you know the February thaw was just a cruel joke ( I call it March Fool's!). Biggest dump of snow you've seen all winter, back to consistently cold, more snow. Snow tires required.

April - Alternating snow, rain, muddy roads in the day, frozen ruts by night. AND BY THE WAY- The term "ride the ruts" DOES NOT mean drive in the ruts! It means ride on the top of the ruts. P.S. When driving on dirt roads remember that people live there and need to drive on them daily, please don't treat them like your own personal mud bog. Snow tires still required.

May - Mud. Refer to April rules.

June - Mud slowly dries out, leaving lots of potholes. Warmish and rainy. You can change to summer tires now.

July - Generally bordering on hot with warm nights, mostly/partly sunny mixed with thunderstorms and warm rain showers.

August - Not as warm as you think it should be. Nights are clear and cold.

September - It's fall.

October - Brisk-warm days. Cold nights. Third mud season. Generally by the end of the month it's time to put your snow tires back on.

November - Cold. No snow. Just cold. Snow tires required.

December - Scattered dirty brown snow piles. Brown grass. Cold, dark and boring. Snow tires required.
